Materials for UrbanEden were chosen based on three criteria:
Environmental impact. How much energy and resources are required to make and install the material? Does the manufacturing process use or produce toxins? Once installed, does the material help maintain a healthy indoor environment?
Durability. Will the material hold up to use with low maintenance?
Beauty. Does it enhance the design? Will it make the experience of living in the house more enjoyable?
Highlights include geopolymer cement concrete (GCC) and high recycled-content structural steel framing to reduce embodied energy and carbon; triple-pane fenestration to maximize performance; and plant-based interior finishes, laminated bamboo, and thermally modified ash flooring to maximize occupant health.
